Shmoogie has lately been taking quite an interest in knitting and sewing, along with her more established loves of stickers, tape, and glue. She asks to help me, squirms into my lap whether I've invited her or not, and is rewarded with the task of wrapping the yarn for each stitch as I work the needles if I'm knitting, or pulling the needle through the fabric after I've stuck it in the right place if I'm sewing.
She loses interest pretty quickly, but comes back again another day. Or, in the past few days, becomes quite petulant and demands to be allowed to do the whole thing all by herself. With knitting, this goes pretty much nowhere, although I did cast on a few bulky stitches for her, which she sometimes pickes up, then calls for me because some of the stitches have fallen off the needle, then puts it all down again. With stitching, though, she actually produced a passable whip-stitch seam on some boiled wool legwarmers (for herself, because we were discussing an outing and she was complaining that she didn't want to go anywhere outside because her ankles get cold). She stitched up the last three inches of the first one while I went as fast as I could through the second. I have to say I was pretty impressed.
Today, she picked out a finger puppet pattern from Hand-Stitched Felt by Kata Golda. She picked the colors (although she wanted the outer ears to be red and I strongly encouraged her away from that, because I couldn't quite deal with the color scheme) and she cut out the inner ears, but she got frustrated and made me cut out the rest. I stitched the face and then together we stitched the inner ears to the outer ears (she stuck the needle in from the front, I stuck it in from the back, and she always pulled it through). She reluctantly stitched on the tail at the end.
Super cute, right? She says we shouldn't make anything else from that book ever, though. Because it was too boring. But she seemed to be enjoying it, mostly? She was just pretending, she says, because she didn't want anyone to know that it was too boring for her!
